beneath the Galka settlements in Altepa Desert. Being awakened by
accident, they drove the Galka out of their homes and forced them to
flee to Bastok through Korroloka Tunnel.
- Expand Images
- Ark Angels
- Also known as the Crystal Warriors. They were created by Promathia
to represent the central vice of each of the five races - the arrogance
of the Elvaan, the apathy of the Humes, the envy of the Mithra, the
cowardice of the Tarutaru, the rage of the Galka. Kam'lanaut and
Eald'narche summoned them to fight for them while they enacted their
plan to resurrect the Shadow Lord and open the Gates of Paradise. They
were eventually defeated by Lion, Zeid and Aldo.

- Automaton
- Mechanical puppets developed by the alchemists of Aht Uhrgan.
Highly customizable and controllable from a distance, they are somewhat
of an equivalent to Cardians in Windurst. However, as opposed to
Cardians, Automatons were initially created for entertainment purposes,
even though professional Puppetmasters have since adapted them for
combat as well. Empress Jubleel, Nashmeira's mother, has introduced the
concept of programming to give Automatons behavioural patterns, thus
allowing them to be more independent: a Puppetmaster controlling such an
Automaton would no longer need to dictate their every move.

- Avatar
- Summonable gods who protect different aspects of Vana'diel. There
are five Terrestrial Avatars: Diabolos, Phoenix, Fenrir, Carbuncle,
Bahamut. In addition, there are six Celestial Avatars representing the

but Phoenix and Bahamut can be summoned. The Terrestrial Avatars
participate in a fierce battle to protect Vana'diel from the spread of
the Emptiness in the Chains of Promathia storyline.
- Cardian
- Dolls brought to life by the strange fruit of the trees cultivated
within Heavens Tower. They became grunts for work and war, and held
loyalty only to Zonpa-Zippa. Eventually, they grew out of control, so
Zonpa-Zippa made the Ace Cardians to manage them.

- Elvaan
- The third of the five races of Vana'diel. They have long flattened
pointed ears, but are otherwise human-looking. They started as a rather
insignificant race, but soon grew to a powerful empire, and formed the
Kingdom of San d'Oria on the Quon continent. Elvaan strictly adhere to
their code of conduct and their belief in the Dawn Goddess Altana. Their
kingdom soon grew to an empire as they took over many lands, until they
tried to seize Bastok and Windurst, the homes of the other four races.
This caused a great war between the three kingdoms that raged on with
bloodbaths on both sides. The San d'Orians fell to Bastok when firearms
were used against them. They then fell into civil war for the throne.
Today they are a shadow of their former glory.

- Dawn Maidens
- Women of the Zilart with exceptional skill in telepathy and magic
were chosen to be Dawn Maidens. They were said to be in direct service
to Altana. They soon developed a distaste for the way the Zilart treated
the Kuluu and conspired with them to sabotage the Zilart's experiment
to open the gates to paradise. They were killed in the resulting
Meltdown, but were blessed with "afterlife" to watch over future
incarnations of the gatekeeper.
- Expand Images
- Galka
- The first of the five races of Vana'diel. As the first created,
they still have beastlike traits in their appearance. Galka have a
large, powerful body, and brute strength, with a hairy ape like face.
There are no female Galka, and thus, they do not reproduce. When Galka
reach the last days of life, they return to their homeland in Altepa
Desert in order to be reborn as children. This is called the Journey of
Rebirth. However, once reborn, they retain no memories of their past.
The Galka were the first race to create a peaceful civilization. When
they were forced from their homes by the Antica they landed on what
would eventually be the town of Bastok. During the San d'Orian
imperialism, they formed an alliance with the Humes, built the city of
Bastok, and fought back the San d'Orians. As time progressed, the Galka
got poorer in the age of technology. They were seen as inferior by the
Humes, and a deep resentment has thus developed between the 2 races.

- Gigas
- A secondary race of beastmen who live in the far north islands.
They allied with the Kindred and were key players in the initial stages

Jeuno, but Kam'lanaut and his armies pushed them back and they
retreated to Delkfutt's tower.
- Expand Images
- Goblin
- A highly intelligent race of beastmen. Some of them have settled in
Jeuno and cohabit with the civilized races. They are known for their
advanced knowledge of smithing and alchemy.
- Expand Images
- Hume
- The last of the five races of Vana'diel. Humes are human
equivalents. They orginated on the southern portion of Quon. With their
lack of strong skill in anything, they were mostly ignored by rest of
world, until they formed an alliance with Galka during the invasion of
San d'Oria and formed Bastok. They eventually grew stronger and more
powerful in the age of technology, while Galka didn't. This started to
cause resentment on both sides.

- Immortals
- The name given to the elite Blue Mage corps in the service of the
Empire of Aht Uhrgan. Blue Mages were first introduced to Aht Uhrgan at
the behest of Emperor Balrahn. They are artificially created by infusing
a living being with beastman or monster blood, or by transplanting some
monster or beastman tissue to them. This gives them a feral quality and
allows them to harness the powers of monsters. However, every Blue Mage
runs the risk of being overcome by the beastly powers within them. When
that happens, they usually transform into Soulflayers. The Immortals
are currently led by Raubahn.
- Imp
- A small species of demon native to Aht Uhrgan. They served as
messengers in the Shadow Lord's army during the Crystal War. Their
exceptionally quick reflexes allow them to be able to see through any
disguise. Thus, as they are aggressive on sight, the Invisible spell is
ineffective against them.
- Expand Images
- Kindred
- A race of beastmen who developed in the north. The people nicknamed
them "demons". They are stronger than either the Orcs, Quadav, or
Yagudo, and solely serve the Shadow Lord.
- Expand Images
- Kuluu
- A race of people biologically descended from the Zilart with no
natural magic or telepathic powers. They received their magic from
avatars, but were condemned by the Zilart as freaks and forced into
slavery through amulets created by the Zilart king. These amulets sent
the thoughts of the wearer to the "Eye of Altana" for monitoring. As a
consequence of the magic explosion known as the Meltdown, most of the
Kuluu were turned into Tonberries.
-
- Lamia
- An artificial race of beastmen resembling snake-like women.
Originally a type of biological weapon (or chimera) developed by the
alchemists of Aht Uhrgan, which they used to eliminate Ephramadian
survivors, some rogue Lamiae have since made their home around Arrapago
Reef. They have the ability to bewitch fallen warriors, thus assembling
an undead army for themselves. They may attack Aht Uhrgan in the form of
the Undead Swarm, the least organized, but, arguably the most dangerous
of the beastman forces. Lamiae are led by Medusa and are the only
beastman race capable of becoming a Corsair.
- Expand Images
- Mamool Ja
- One of the main hostile beastman races in Aht Uhrgan, resembling
bipedal chameleons in appearance. They are violent, highly organized and

- The second of the five races of Vana'diel, also bearing beastlike
traits, much like Galka. They are lithe humanoids with cat ears and
tail, but, unlike Galka, have different genders. Only females are ever
seen outside of their territory. Mithra men stay at home to raise
children. Women created the political and warrior classes. A large group
of Mithra has emigrated from their home continent of Olzhyria (situated
in the south of Vana'diel) and settled partly on the island of Elshimo
(creating the town of Kazham), and partly in Mindartia, alongside the
Tarutaru. The two tribes are hostile to each other, and see themselves
as exiles from their homeland.

mingle quite well with the civilized races. A good number of them lives
in Aht Uhrgan, but their hometown is Nashmau, situated in the dank,
swampy environment of Caedarva Mire, in the region that was once spanned
by Ephramad. The Qiqirn's attraction to money often leads them to
become shopkeepers or item appraisers.
- Expand Images
- Quadav
- One of the primary races of beastmen. Turtle-like in appearance,
they lived in the caverns which became the Palborough Mines. Driven from
their homes by the Humes in the course of their development, they
therefore primarily attacked Bastok during the Crystal War. They still
have a stronghold in the Palborough Mines, as well as in Beadeaux.

the 5 Tarutaru ministries of magic. Responsible for magical research,
notably on plants. Current minister: Rukususu. Predecessor: Iru-Kuiru.
- Sahagin
- A secondary race of beastmen, fish-like. They live in the south
eastern islands. The Shadow Lord sought them for help, but few bothered.
- Expand Images
- Serpent Generals
- The elite of the Aht Uhrgan army, these 5 generals each represent
an element (plus the sky as the 5th and highest rank) and are the
foremost defenders of the city during beastmen attacks. As such, they
may also be taken prisoner during Besieged, in which case, it is up to
adventurers to rescue them from beastmen strongholds. Oddly enough, the
generals represent each civilized race, except the Tarutaru.
- Soulflayer
- The most common form into which a Blue Mage who can no longer
control his or her powers may turn. Soulflayers resemble humanoid squid
or octopi and are highly skilled in magic. They are aggressive to sound,
and their high attunement to magical forces makes the Sneak spell
ineffective.
- Expand Images
- Star Sibyl
- The leader of the Tarutaru. The first Star Sibyl was so titled when
she found the Full Moon Fountain of the ancient Kuluu which gave the
Tarutaru proficiency in magic. She was also given the Book of the Gods,
and had a vision of the prosperous future of the life of the Tarutaru.
She united the Tarutaru and was succeeded by a long line of Star Sibyls.
The Full Moon Fountain has been used ever since as a way to predict the
future of Windurst. The current Star Sibyl is in a difficult position.
During the Crystal War, Karaha-Baruha, Windurst's hero, attempted to
summon the full power of Fenrir, the guardian of the Full Moon Fountain.
This saved Windurst, but at a great cost. The Full Moon Fountain was
dimmed, losing its ability to predict the future, leaving the Star Sibyl
with no guidance to provide to her fellow citizens. She has been doing
her best to provide false prophecies ever since, in the hopes that
something might someday restore the power of the Fountain. This is
eventually achieved in the Windurst Mission Storyline.

- Talekeeper of the Galka
- The Talekeeper carries all the past memories of the Galka with him,
rather than them having a written history. This makes him a sort of
leader among the race. However, his knowledge is not infinite, he only
retains around 200 years of past history. Due to this burden, no
Talekeeper has never lived long enough to undergo the Journey of
Rebirth. The gift of the Talekeeper seems to be randomly bestowed on a
Galka upon reincarnation.
-
- Tarutaru
- The third of the five races of Vana'diel. Tarutaru are small
child-like, and resemble chipmunks. They are not strong, but are highly
intelligent. Weary from fear of the beastmen, they wandered the world in
search of peace, and settled on Windurst. They formed an alliance with
the Mithra when they came upon their land and have been a powerful force
ever since. They discovered magic, which then spread across the land to
all others, including the beastmen.
- Expand Images
- Tenshodo
- A vast network of pirates based in Norg, with a large commercial
branch in Jeuno. They came to prominence during the Crystal War by
supplying materials from the Far East.
- Tonberry

Like the Sahagin, they were sought for help by the Shadow Lord after the
battle of Tavnazia, but few did.
- Expand Images
- Troll
- A race of large, hulking, brown-skinned beastmen, and one of the
main opponents to the Empire of Aht Uhrgan. Trolls used to serve as
mercenaries for the Gigas, as well as for the Mithran armies of Olzhirya
and Aht Uhrgan itself. They also maintain a close relationship with
Moblins, which allows them to benefit from the latter's research in
alchemy. Their stronghold is situated in the underground city of
Halvung, in the fiery entrails of Mount Zhayolm. They are led by
chieftain Gurfurlur the Menacing. Trolls are the only beastman race
capable of becoming a Puppetmaster.
- Expand Images
- Yagudo
- One of the primary races of beastmen. They are bird-like in
appearance and highly intelligent. Their society is a theocracy, based
on a fanatical religious doctrine, and the land they share with the
Tarutaru has made them enemies, especially during the Crystal War. They
have strongholds in Giddeus and Castle Oztroja. In the Windurst Mission
Storyline, they demand control of the Horutoto Ruins after
Ajido-Marujido activates them in his feud with the rogue Cardians, since
this activation goes against the treaty signed after the war.
- Expand Images
- Zilart
- The first civilized race on Vana'diel, which pre-existed the five
main ones. The Zilart quickly gained great magic skill and telepathy,
and used these powers to control the Kuluu, which they considered as
degenerates. Their quest to open the Gates of Paradise led to their
destruction.
Characters
- Abqubah
- Naja's hapless sidekick. Bullied and invariably made to do all the
dirty work, he is, nevertheless, unquestionably obedient. He's in charge
of briefing adventurers about the Treasures of Aht Uhrgan missions and
scheduling rank evaluations for Assault missions.
- Expand Images
- Ace Cardians
- These Cardians were created to manage other Cardians with basic
wrong/right logic. There are only four of them. Under Karaha-Baruha's
guidance, they built the super strong cardian - Joker. When he died
during the Crystal War, they lost their sense of right/wrong morality,
and everything began to seem gray. Unknown to the Tarutaru, the Ace
Cardians kidnapped Zonpa-Zippa, and were lost during the Crystal War.
They later reappeared to steal Ajido-Marujido's work. Ajido-Marujido
discovered that they kidnapped Zonpa-Zippa to prevent him from revealing
their plan to reactivate Joker. What they didn't realize was that
Karaha-Baruha had bound his life force to Joker, so in order to
resurrect Joker, they would have to resurrect Karaha-Baruha.
-
- Acheufagais D'Oraguille
- The ninth king of San d'Oria. He ruled from 558-567. He received
the crown after he personally assassinated his stepbrother, who had more
claim to the throne than he did. Called "The War King" for his ferocity
in battle, he was loved by warriors, but hated by the aristocracy. He
died on the throne.
- Expand Images
- Ajido-Marujido
- The current Minister of the Orastery of Windurst, and brother to
Apururu, the Minister of the Manustery. Their father, Zonpa-Zippa,
former Minister of the Manustery, was captured by the Ace Cardians to
prevent him from interfering in their plans to revive Joker.
Ajido-Marujido plays an important part in the Windurst Mission
Storyline, after realizing that the Book of the Gods has lost its powers
(which is a bad omen). He attempts to unravel the Cardians' plot and
discover the truth behind Karaha-Baruha's research. He is thrown in jail
for souring relations with the Yagudo in his search for answers, but
escapes with the help of Apururu and Shantotto. He eventually succeeds
in putting Karaha-Baruha's soul to rest and restoring Fenrir's spirit to
the Full Moon Fountain with the help of the Star Sibyl, thus proving
that Windurst has the power to overcome its destiny and shape its own
history.

- Aldo
- The hume leader of the Tenshodo, helping to sneak illegal weapons
from the Far East to Bastok and Jeuno. He was an escapee from Tavnazia
during the Crystal War as a child. (He's the guy we see in the opening
movie.) He is one of the three heroes of the Rise of the Zilart
storyline (alongside Lion and Zeid). His sister, Verena, also plays a
major role, as she is kidnapped to open the doors of the floating city,
Tu'lia. He also lends a helping hand in the Chains of Promathia
storyline.

- Alexander
- A maleficent, ancient deity. Alexander's spirit needs a body to
incarnate itself. This body bears the appearance of a mechanical giant.
His first incarnation and confrontation with Odin led to the destruction
of the Alzadaal civilization, which existed 900 years before Aht
Uhrgan. Unable to salvage the remains of the first construct, Razfahd
works with Ghatsad in order to create a gigantic Automaton, as a new,
more powerful body for Alexander to inhabit. Razfahd believes that this
will let him control Alexander, defeat Aht Uhrgan's enemies and bring
about an age of prosperity. However, Alexander will not let himself be
controlled and attempts to kill anyone who doesn't show proper deference
to him. He notably kills Nashmeira. Outraged by this, Luzaf allows Odin
to take control of him in order to face Alexander. Since the
confrontation of the two deities would lead to Ragnarok—essentially, the
destruction of the world—Razfahd realizes his mistake and sacrifices
himself, somehow managing to stop Alexander.

- Alphollon Tavnazia
- A royal vassal of San d'Oria. He was given the task of constructing

south. This was Tavnazia. He was the keeper of a tablet discovered
underground, that turned out to be the "Lay of the Immortals".

- Alois, Senator
- An embezzling senator of Bastok. Gumbah reveals his corruption
which results in his removal from office, and Gumbah's recognition as
the Talekeeper of the Galka.

- Altana
- The Dawn Goddess, worshipped by all civilized races of Vana'diel,
even though San d'Oria and Tavnazia seem to be the two most pious
nations of the lot. Altana is compassionate and merciful, and
counterbalances Promathia's drive to destruction by the power of love.
Originally, she created the Zilart as the only race on Vana'diel, but
they attempted to open the Gates of Paradise, which resulted in their
destruction. In her sorrow, Altana shed tears upon Vana'diel, five of
which created the five civilized races. She also split the Mothercrystal
into five shards, in an attempt to stall the spread of the Emptiness.
At the end of the Chains of Promathia storyline, she effectively
reiterates her act of creation by shedding a tear of blessing for each
of the protagonists of the story, who, coincidentally, happen to be
representatives of each of the five races.
-
- Amnaf
- A female Immortal. Unquestionably loyal to Raubahn, for whom it is
hinted that she has feelings, she tries to halt progress towards
Alexander when his whereabouts are finally discovered. However, she
succumbs to the danger that all Blue Mages face: overcome by the monster
blood within her, she transforms into a Soulflayer and is defeated.
Raubahn himself rips her heart out of her chest as she lies wounded,
proclaiming that her part in the story is over.

- Aphmau
- The apparently timid court Puppetmaster of Aht Uhrgan, who is
actually the Empress Nashmeira. Thanks to her mother's discoveries in
Automaton technology, Aphmau is able to control two Automatons at once,
Mnejing and Ovjang, even though only Ovjang is actually hers. Aphmau is a
necessary cover, which has been devised in order to protect Nashmeira,
as she is still very young. When she hears the rumours about the Black
Coffin, her curiosity gets the better of her, and she decides to get to
the bottom of the business on her own. Luzaf kidnaps Ovjang, intent on
studying its mechanisms in case they could be useful to his ends, but
Aphmau follows suit and ends up being a ‘voluntary' captive on the Black
Coffin. The encounter gives her new perspectives on both her duties as a
ruler and the painful history of her motherland. Unlikely feelings
develop between her and Luzaf, and, together, they endeavour to
challenge the plans of her brother, Razfahd, as well as Luzaf's pact
with Odin. Killed by Alexander during the battle, Aphmau is brought back
to life by Luzaf, who offers his own life to Odin in exchange. This
experience allows her to find the courage to be the Empress that Aht
Uhrgan needs, and she is formally re-crowned in celebration of
Alexander's defeat.

in order to exact his revenge. He gets involved in the Chains of
Promathia storyline, but when his imposture is finally revealed, he

ill-fated Northland expedition there to see if there was more. This
piece actually turned out to be a chunk of the Star of Tavnazia. Using
the knowledge he gained from his studies, he developed a crystal engine
that would eventually power airships. During their development, he
worked with figures in hooded robes that may have been Zilart. The

since the end of the Crystal War. His wife, the late Queen Leaute, was a

- Du'Dha the Ever-Young
- Famous king of the Quadav, who ruled for an exceptionally long
time, from the dawn of the Age of Magic in 250 and well into the Age of
Power, until around 524. Known for his fragile health and his leisurely
pursuits, he was considered as an unlikely candidate to the throne,
despite his royal blood. However, he also proved to be a talented
fortune teller, and was thus appointed as advisor, then successor to the
king. During his reign, Du'Dha established friendly relations with the
Elvaan, notably with Lanfeaur d'Oraguille, who would go on to become the
first king of San d'Oria. He was also responsible for the construction

- Eald'Narche [VILLAIN]
- One of the two prominent Zilart Princes. He is revealed to be the
older brother of Kam'lanaut, despite appearances. Experiments involving
exposure to a Mother Crystal stopped him from aging and sealed him into
his current form. Upon the destruction of the Zilart, he and his brother
slept frozen in the Tower of Delkfutt's reaction chamber, until many
years later, Raogrimm reactivated the crystals. He turns out to be the
real mastermind behind the present day plan to open the Gates of
Paradise, including starting the Crystal War from behind the throne of
the Shadow Lord, and also using his ability to read minds. When he is
defeated by Zeid in Tu'lia, he attempts to recreate the Meltdown, a
catastrophe that wiped out the Zilart long ago. Yve'noile appears to him
before his death and tells him that the Gates of Paradise cannot be
opened by Vana'diel's destruction.

to the spiritual bond that exists between dragoon and wyvern, would

propelled 10,000 years in the future. She went under the guise of
Cardinal Mildaurion, spiritual leader of the Tavnazian cathedral, but
disappeared when the marquisate was destroyed, and joined the ranks of
the Armathrwn Society of Jeuno in order to monitor the actions of
Kam'lanaut and Eald'narche, while awaiting the advent of the Keeper of

agreement, he gave them the Sceptre Royaulais. The soldiers of Bastok
and Fellenant's Temple Knights succeeded in taking the castle up to the
point of seizing King Raigegue, when Fellenant had a vision from the
Scepter and surrendered. He was placed in the dungeons, since a decree
forbade royal blood to be spilled. He later escaped to Jugner Forest.

- Fenrir
- Terrestrial avatar of the moon. Karaha-Baruha, the hero of Windurst
during the Crystal War, used Fenrir to protect the city. He visited
Full Moon Fountain alongside the Star Sibyl and attempted to summon
Fenrir in his full power, rather than just a fraction of it, which is
what normally happens when a summoner invokes an avatar. However, this
proved too much for both of them. Fenrir's lifeforce waned, while
Karaha-Baruha's was split into two. Part of it incarnated itself within
Fenrir. It reappeared alongside him just once to defend the city. The
other part lived on inside Joker. This also had the consequence of
dimming the Full Moon Fountain, which no longer foretold the future.
Thus, the Star Sibyl had to invent her prophecies, unable to truly see
what fate was in store for her country. In the Windurst Mission
Storyline, Fenrir's lifeforce is restored. (See also Summon:Fenrir)

little girl, named Falbub, and entrusted her to the care of a couple of
servants, watching over her as she grew up. However, survivors of Frit's
ravages ended up banding together and attacked his home, killing both
his servants and Falbub. Angered and saddened by the fact that innocent
souls had to pay for his crimes, Frit decided to accept retribution. He
ascended to the top of a volcano, where the souls of the dead were said
to gather during solar eclipses. When the next eclipse occurred, the
ghosts of those he had slain attacked him, their curses transforming him
into a demon. However, Falbub's spirit tried to interpose itself. Once
again, undaunted by his demonic appearance, she smiled at him without a
word of reproach. Upon seeing this, Frit prayed to Altana to exchange
his life for hers. His wish was granted, but Altana soon saw that Falbub

Luzaf and his crew back to life. Luzaf is destined to become Odin's

belongs to Razfahd, the latter was not interested in becoming a
Puppetmaster, and the Automaton therefore went to Aphmau, along with
Ovjang. He appears calmer and less loquacious than his female
counterpart, and his behavioural pattern is presumably meant to somewhat
resemble Jalzahn. Mnejing is notably part of Karababa's welcoming
ceremony, where he gets severely criticized by King of Hearts,
Karababa's upstart automaton. When Ovjang gets kidnapped by the Mamool
Ja, Mnejing accompanies Aphmau to try to recover her, but both are taken
by Luzaf in the process. When Luzaf and Nashmeira are finally captured,
Razfahd orders Ghatsad to dismantle both Automatons in order to use
their parts, and the advanced programming that went into them, to
complete Alexander. After the latter is defeated, Ghatsad manages to
reassemble them both, presenting them to Nashmeira during her coronation
(even though he actually had to melt the crown in order to fix them).
Mnejing's new behavioural pattern seems to display some of Razfahd's
character traits, thus serving as a walking memorial to his former
owner.

- Monberaux, Doctor
- The best-known (if not only) doctor in Jeuno, his clinic being
situated in Upper Jeuno. He is a very kind-hearted man, and a childhood

Promathia storyline, as Selh'teus is placed in his care when first
discovered in Delkfutt's Tower.

- Former Papsque of San d'Oria, and a personal acquaintance of both
the late Count Caffaule and Lady Hinaree, when they lived near the
monastery of Davoi (or La Vaule, as it was known in the past) before it
was destroyed by the Orcs during the Crystal War. Muchavatte is known to
have undergone a deep change in his religious views during his life,
announcing on his deathbed that he "was forced to abandon the truth."

- A member of the Armathrwn society. Originally a Kuluu, along with
Selh'teus, he was ashamed of his "inferiority". He thus cooperates with
the Zilart and wears a special eyepiece which has the same telepathic
functions as the "whisper of the soul". During the Crystal War, he was
instrumental to creating the allied army. In the Chains of Promathia
storyline, his main goal is to stop Selh'teus and find the Chamber of
Eventide in Al'taieu, so that he can attempt to become a fully-fledged
Zilart. When he realizes that even the Chamber has been tainted by the
Emptiness, he loses his mind and pledges his soul to Promathia, from
whom he wishes to learn the secret of creation. The resurrected
Promathia absorbs him, and he dies upon learning the truth he so craved.

- Naja Salaheem
- The crafty Mithra leader of Salaheem's Sentinels, the most
prominent mercenary company in Aht Uhrgan. She's very short-tempered,
wily and an apt businesswoman, always looking for ways to make more
profit. She's notably not above swindling her own employees of their
earnings, and inventing rules and regulations to do so. To enforce her
authority, she always carries around a large mace (called a
Morgenstern). However, she does bring to light the return of the Black
Coffin, as well as Razfahd's shady dealings, and even helps out in the
battle against Amnaf. But if the experience teaches her anything, it's

involved in the Windurst Mission Storyline when the Star Onion Brigade
steals Joker's Mana Orb from her. It appears she has also stolen the
Book of the Gods from the Optistery and hidden it in the House of the
Hero (Karaha-Baruha's former residence in Windurst Walls). This is where
Ajido-Marujido finds it, only to realize that its pages have gone
blank. Nanaa Mihgo is also involved in the sidequest for the Thief's

- Nashmeira II, Empress
- Current ruler of Aht Uhrgan. As required by custom, no one is
allowed to see her, and she therefore addresses visitors to her palace
from behind a thick tapestry. She is later revealed to be Aphmau, the
court Puppetmaster, using ventriloquism to pull off the deception.
Nashmeira is very concerned about the well-being of the Empire, and
therefore calls the mainland nations for help when she finds it
overwhelmed by beastmen attacks. She is subsequently heavily involved in
the events of the Aht Uhrgan Mission Storyline and is triumphantly
re-crowned upon its completion.
-
- Odin
- The dark deity of the Underworld. He is in antagonism with
Alexander, and the two are destined to face each other in a
confrontation known as Ragnarok, the winner theoretically gaining the
right to dictate the laws of the world. In reality, the confrontation
leads to mass destruction and is responsible for the disappearance of
the Alzadaal civilization 900 years in the past. The dying Prince Luzaf
makes a pact with Odin, allowing him to use his body as he sees fit in
return for granting him revenge over Aht Uhrgan for destroying his
homeland. Odin sees this as an opportunity to use Luzaf's body in order
to manifest himself in a tangible form, if the need should arise. 200
years after Luzaf's death, Odin senses the imminent revival of Alexander
and brings Luzaf back, giving him a chance to slake his revenge in
preparation for Ragnarok. But Luzaf's meeting with Nashmeira changes his
outlook, and he decides to challenge Odin's authority, going so far as
to stop him from unleashing his attack during the confrontation with
Alexander. This matches Razfahd's dying interference with Alexander, and
a second Ragnarok is averted. However, Nashmeira's death forces Luzaf
to give up his life to Odin once again, in order to bring her back.

and energetic, her behavioural pattern presumably being made to resemble
that of Jubleel. Ovjang accompanies Aphmau wherever she goes. She
notably travels with her in order to discover the secret of the Black
Coffin, and gets kidnapped by the Mamool Ja in the process. Luzaf
retrieves both her and Mnejing, hoping to study them in case they prove
useful for his plans, but Aphmau refuses to abandon them and follows
them to the Black Coffin. Ovjang is scrapped alongside Mnejing after
Luzaf and Nashmeira's capture, in order to provide spare parts for
Alexander. However, Ghatsad manages to repair and improve them both,
presenting them to Nashmeira during her coronation.

- Pieuje d'Oraguille, Prince
- The youngest son of King Destin of San d'Oria. He is the head of
the Temple Knights, and, as such, has close connections with the San
d'Orian cathedral. He notably serves as Papsque Shamonde's pawn in his
bid to retrieve Lightbringer and find the Gates of Paradise. Known to
prefer discussion over action, Pieuje is at odds with his brash elder

-
- Prishe
- A young Elvaan girl, who acts as the leader of the Tavnazian
survivors. It is strongly believed that she is the Abhorrent One, which
is another term for the Keeper of the Apocalypse, a being which is
designed to bring about the resurrection of Promathia. She was involved
in an accident in her youth which left her unable to age by
crystallizing her inner Emptiness (Promathia's curse upon all living
things) in visible form as a shard of magicite embedded in her chest.
Cardinal Mildaurion informed her of her destiny as the Keeper (although
this is later disproved) and of the fact that she intended to allow
Promathia to be reborn in order to defeat him. She gave Prishe one of
the Zilart amulets used to monitor the thoughts of the Kuluu in order to
keep watch over her. With the help of this amulet, Prishe is also later
able to communicate with Selh'teus. Despite her fate, Prishe has an
energetic, devil-may-care attitude, and is wholly devoted to saving the
world from the clutches of Promathia. After the Twilight God is
defeated, the magicite in her chest dissolves, and she regains her
mortality.

- Promathia
- The Twilight God, dark counterpart of the Dawn Goddess Altana.
Together, they are the creators of all living beings on Vana'diel, which
is the revelation attained at the end of the Chains of Promathia
storyline. Formerly, it was believed that beastmen originated from
Promathia, while the civilized races originated from Altana. Promathia
destroyed the Zilart when they attempted to open the Gates of Paradise.
When Altana created the five civilized races in response, Promathia
cursed them with Emptiness. This ensured their mortality, but also
brought out one defining sin in every race. These sins are embodied by
the Ark Angels. Promathia seeks to unleash the Emptiness upon the world,
thus causing the death of all things, and allowing him to absorb their
souls. He is bound in chains in order to prevent him from completing his
purpose, but the advent of the Keeper of the Apocalypse threatens to
free him.

and forced to return to San d'Oria. The fact that he can't tolerate
Naja Salaheem's abuse is another strong incentive for him to stop his

-
- Ramuh
- A sage from a nation situated on the Buburimu Peninsula. His great
learning allowed the country to prosper and develop advanced technology.
However, one day, one of Ramuh's machines predicted an earthquake. His
kinsmen were unwilling to believe the possibility of a tragedy after so
much prosperity, so they didn't take any precautions. The earthquake
struck, and the people, angry at their own foolishness, began to look
for a scapegoat. Suspicions naturally fell on Ramuh, who decided to
exile himself to an uninhabited island after a young boy, who had lost
his parents in the earthquake, threw stones at him. The nation neglected
its technology, out of spite for Ramuh. Thus, when beastmen attacked
them, several years later, they couldn't defend themselves. The same boy
who had thrown stones at him—now grown into a man—was sent to ask Ramuh
for help, and the sage accepted. He used the Staff of Olduum to wipe
out the beastmen with a thunderstorm, but victory had a bitter taste.
Fearful of this new power, Ramuh's kinsmen soon forced him into exile
again. This time, he didn't return. The nation collapsed, but Altana
rewarded Ramuh's selflessness by taking his soul to the heavens and
transforming him into the Celestial Avatar of Lightning. Olduum is the
name of the brightest, purple-coloured star of the Ramuh constellation.
It's also the name of an ancient civilization which used to exist in the
Aht Uhrgan region. It's possible that Ramuh learned how to control
lightning from them on one of his travels. (See also Summon:Ramuh)

Discovering the secret of Lanfeaur d'Oraguille's tablet led him to
acquire Lightbringer, which he used to finally reunify the kingdom, the
power of the sword being such that he never had the need to draw it.
Subsequently believing that this power was too great for him to wield,
he sent the sword to Tavnazia and had it locked away in its caverns.
Ancient lore says that he saved a black dragon from death, and as a
result, the dragon (Vrtra) now protects his tomb.

on the Northland Expedition alongside the two of them, but, unable to
contain his feelings, Ulrich tried to kill him. Cornelia interposed

- Razfahd, Grand Vizier
- Nashmeira's elder brother, and theoretical owner of Mnejing, even
though he never really took much interest in him. He was next in line
for the throne, until a near-fatal accident in his youth left him with
no recourse but accepting a transfusion of beastman blood. Rendered
unfit to govern, he has watched over his younger sister, all the while
scheming behind her back in order to achieve his own goals. He believes
that Nashmeira is too kind-hearted and immature to rule, and intends to
revive Alexander, believing that he will protect Aht Uhrgan and allow it
to take dominion over Vana'diel. He disregards the fact that a battle
between Alexander and Odin is what destroyed the nation of Alzadaal in
the past, believing that a custom-made Automaton body will allow him to
control Alexander. However, events prove him wrong, as Alexander stops
responding to commands and finally kills Nashmeira. When Razfahd
realizes his mistake, he sacrifices himself and effectively manages to
stop Alexander, even though it is not exactly clear how he achieves
this. After Alexander is defeated, Ghatsad manages to recreate Mnejing

Lighbringer is what caused the destruction of Tavnazia and separated it

about the true power of the sword and prevent them from using it. Trion
and Pieuje, uncertain of his identity and concerned about San d'Oria's

causing the Meltdown. Selh'teus became the protector of Al'taieu, trying
to prevent the Gates from being reopened and the world being returned
to its original state. This would cause the death of all living beings,
since they are, by nature, imperfect, and would not be able to survive
within a perfect, complete world. Absorbing the spreading Emptiness
within himself, he was eventually overcome by it and died. However, when
Tenzen used the power of Phoenix to stop Bahamut from destroying

of Magic. Her magic powers manifested themselves at a very early age,
when she accidentally burned down her own home. She was taken in by the
Star Sibyl of the time and eventually designated as her successor. But
the newly discovered power of magic created conflicts among the Tarutaru
tribes, and as a result, no one attended Tukuku's rite of accession.
Thus, she devoted a lot of effort to uniting her people, and eventually
persuaded them to create the Federation of Windurst.

- Tzee Xicu the Manifest
- Supreme leader of the Yagudo, believed to be the embodiment of a
divinity. Originally reluctant to join the Shadow Lord during the
Crystal War, she eventually complied, for the safety of her people. She
is responsible for almost destroying Windurst, but her forces were
eventually driven back by Karaha-Baruha. They were later defeated by the
Mithran Navy. Tzee Xicu was believed to have taken her own life after
the war, but reappeared some years later, bringing back hope to her
people. As this would mean that she has a much longer lifespan than a
normal Yagudo, some believe that the current Tzee Xicu is an imposter.
She resides in Castle Oztroja.

- Ulmia
- Daughter of Despachiaire, the Tavnazian elder. She unsuccessfully
attempted to join the Tavnazian Cathedral Choir at a young age, but was
later singled out by Cardinal Mildaurion herself for her beautiful
voice. She is believed to be the only surviving member of the choir
(until Emeline is found), and the only one capable of performing the
known verses of the Lay of the Immortals, or Memoria de la Stona, the
hymn to awaken the sleeping gods. Ulmia is a childhood friend of Prishe,
even though, unlike her, she has been able to age normally. She thus
accompanies her through thick and thin in Chains of Promathia.

- Ulrich
- A Mythril Musketeer alongside Raogrimm and Cornelia (I). Jealous of
their relationship, he developed a deep hatred towards Raogrimm. When
all three of them were selected for the Northland Expedition, he
utilized this occasion to attempt to kill him. But Cornelia interposed
herself, and he stabbed her instead. Horrified at his deeds, he left
both her and Raogrimm to die, telling the other members of the
expedition that they had fallen off a cliff. He was later found
mysteriously murdered, like the others. He was Volker's uncle.

- Ulthalam
- A patriot of house Majaab (the current ruling family of Aht Uhrgan)

-
- Valkeng
- Shamarhaan's automaton. You must fight him for the final piece of
the Puppetmaster's artifact armour, as well as during the final Limit
Break fight, alongside Shamarhaan.
-
- Verena
- Sister of Aldo, leader of the Tenshodo. It is unknown if they are
really related by blood (as Emeline and Aldo are suggested to be each
other's only family in the introductory fmv), or if she's simply another
Tavnazian survivor that Aldo took care of. She is very good friends
with the Goblin Fickblix, and thus has a unique bond with the Jeunoan
Goblin community. She firmly believes that the civilized races and the
beastmen can live in peace someday, even though Fickblix dies at the
hands of adventurers. She also has some form of psychic powers, which
are utilized by Eald'narche in Rise of the Zilart to allow him access to
Tu'lia. After his demise, she reveals to Aldo and Zeid that Lion, who
sacrificed herself during the battle, may still be alive.

- Vijartal Caphieux
- A San d'Orian Royal Knight, loyal to King Raigegue. He was tasked
to infiltrate the Temple Knights of Prince Fellenant to uncover his plot
to assassinate his brother. He also harboured a deep hatred of Bastok
and its inhabitants. But unforeseen circumstances (involving time
travel) drastically modified his views.
-
- Volker
- Captain of the Mythril Musketeers of Bastok and nephew to the
infamous Ulrich, of whose deeds he is, however, ignorant. He is widely
considered as a hero, due to his defeat of the Shadow Lord during the
Crystal War. Unbeknownst to all, it was the Dark Knight Zeid who was
responsible for this deed. However, he mysteriously disappeared after
the battle, which led people to give Volker credit for the victory (and
the responsibility of success). This doesn't sit well with Volker's
conscience. In the Bastok Mission Storyline, he is tasked with
controlling the explosive situation concerning the new Talekeeper.
Moreover, Zeid, who believes that Volker willfully took credit for the
Shadow Lord's defeat, reveals to him the truth about Ulrich's treachery.
The shame of this discovery, along with his misgivings about his
position lead him to confront Zeid in duel, attempting to persuade him
to accept his rightful place. But Zeid acknowledges his strength,
telling him that he is a much better example for Bastok, because he is
able to give his fellow citizens hope, something that Zeid has
abandoned.

He lives on Purgonorgo Isle, a small, desert island in Bibiki Bay, to

fake Louverance in Chains of Promathia. After Promathia's defeat, he is
reunited with his children.

his past life, save for a vague notion that he's heard Gumbah's name
before, and a feeling that they will be good friends.

- Yve'noile, Dawnmaiden
- Leader of the Dawnmaidens, Zilart protectors of the Mothercrystals
and priestesses of Altana. She understood that opening the Gates of
Paradise was dangerous and was sympathetic of the Kuluu's plight. She
created the Chamber of Eventide in Al'taieu, a device said to be able to
cleanse the Emptiness from a person's soul. However, after realizing
that the Emptiness actually congregated in the Chamber, she sacrificed
herself by sealing herself within, in order to hold it at bay. She
appears in spirit form, throughout Rise of the Zilart and Chains of
Promathia, providing guidance and insight. She notably appears to
Eald'narche in his dying moments, demonstrating to him that his quest
was futile.

- A legendary Galkan Dark Knight. He was originally a Mythril
Musketeer, under the name of War Cloud. He dealt the final blow to the
Shadow Lord during the Crystal War, but his misgivings about the Humes'
treatment of the Galka led him to disappear after the battle. Thus
Volker was left to take credit for the victory. When he discovers the
truth about the Shadow Lord's identity, Zeid, angry at what he believes
was a willful deception on Volker's part, reveals to him the truth about
Ulrich and Raogrimm. This leads to a duel between the two men. Volker
tries to persuade Zeid to take back his rightful place among the Mythril
Musketeers, but Zeid refuses, telling Volker that he's much better
suited for the role, because he has hope that Zeid doesn't. This is
partly due to his involvement with Raogrimm, and partly because of his
path as a Dark Knight. In Rise of the Zilart, after defeating the
resurrected Shadow Lord, Zeid decides to put a stop to Kam'lanaut's and
Eald'narche's plans, alongside Aldo and Lion. He is also involved in the
sidequest for the Dark Knight's artifact armour.
